AGNĖ AMBROZAITYTĖ

I am a theatre and stage director of the young generation in Lithuania, with a passion for merging music and theatre to create dynamic, boundary-pushing productions.

My journey began with formal training in music at the Juozas Naujalis Music Gymnasium, followed by studies in conducting at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, before shifting to theatre direction under the mentorship of the renowned Oskaras Koršunovas at the Lithuanian Academy for Music and Theatre. This dual foundation in both music and theatre has been instrumental in shaping my creative approach.

Since 2018, I have been an assistant director at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre (LNOBT), where I’ve had the privilege of working alongside visionary directors such as Robert Wilson on Turandot and Damiano Michieletto on Der Rosenkavalier. These collaborations across diverse repertoires—from Verdi to Bartók, bel canto to contemporary opera—have expanded my understanding of the expressive power opera can hold, and continually inspire my work.

In 2021, I became the youngest opera director to debut at LNOBT with Mamma Moo by Sigitas Mickis, a project that marked a turning point in my career. Since then, I have directed The Bluebeard’s Castle by Béla Bartók, which premiered at the Narva Opera Festival in Estonia in 2023, and Absorptio, an award-winning contemporary opera created with composer D. Digimas, which won the  “Genome” competition for its innovative dual-theatre composition.

My vision is to create works that honor opera’s tradition while presenting it through a fresh, contemporary lens, inviting audiences to experience this genre as a living, evolving art form that connects us to both the past and the present.

Opera is a space where I aim to harmonize my love of music and theatre. Each project I undertake is a step toward my goal of creating timeless pieces that speak to today’s world, viewed through the eyes of a young artist. With a dedication to exploring innovative narratives and staging techniques, I seek to offer audiences a chance to experience opera in its most immersive and resonant form.
